I have used these as part of the GLOBE Program for decades. I have deployed them in dozens of weather stations to track air, water and soil temperatures with no major issues. I recommend lithium batteries if temps get cold. I did a turtle hibernation experiment and used the thermometer with the cover (no additional shelter) to track both subsurface temperature and the other probe to the carapace to monitor vertical movement as soil temperature dropped and then rose as Spring approached.

I purchased this product as part of a lab kit for a college class. It did not even last an entire semester on my porch before it stopped working entirely. Would not recommend this.

Simple, reliable, and very durable. Handy if you're interested in soil/air measurements. Runs a year or more on one set of long life AAs, even through cold winters. Switched to these after getting tired of throwing away too many defective units of mercury free Taylor min/max thermometers, and they're worth every penny of the higher initial cost.
